Most people use their lower backs to do work. Anything from picking objects up to twisting and rotating. Using your back like this overtime will more than likely cause pain and lead to injury. One of the best ways to start strengthening your lower back (stability) while engaging your core muscles is to do the Bird Dog exercise.
The Bird Dog exercise when done correctly is very effective. The first thing you have to do though is to NOT use your back to hyperextend but rather extend at the hip to raise your leg. The exercise also addresses a stability component that is required to keep your body from rocking side to side while your opposite arm and leg are moving.
